White Noise, 2020
acrylic record with laser-etched audio of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, white vinyl sleeve, record player, speakers, carpet
What does the word “sorry” mean and how does its meaning change the more it is repeated? The transparent record appears to be skipping, but the loop is intentional semantic satiation. The audio loops the words “I am sorry” but the speed and material give a distant, distorted, and robotic voice. The white noise blends in with the emptiness of the repeated use of the word.
The record is made from transparent plastic and the needle that rests on the record has a diamond tip. The material and diamond exist in a symbiotic relationship. The two materials interact delicately but in fact, over an unknown period of time, the needle will slowly scratch the acrylic. This means the sound clip will eventually become distorted and eventually become completely misunderstood.
