Dominance and Affection (2023) explores the tension between care and control in human-animal relationships. A door is installed into a deadfall trap. Viewers are invited to crouch beneath it—placing themselves in a vulnerable position—to peer through the peephole to be met with the unblinking gaze of a cat. Referencing Yi-Fu Tuan’s Dominance and Affection, the work interrogates how acts of love and domestication often entangle animals in structures of dominance, urging reflection on the fine line between nurture and constraint.
